Dj' Giovanni Minicilli

How I see being a tango DJ.

Dj’ing in a milonga it is for me to share a collective consciousness. It is at the same time, listening and being engaged towards the others, at the present moment, during the very tanda that is playing, but as the tandas make chapters of one book, during the whole milonga.

My greatest statisfaction comes when I create that breathing motion with cortinas and tandas, when first the dancefloor empties completely, allowing the subtle play of the invitations and next, everyone gets together on the dancefloor.

As I see it the role of the Argentinian tango DJ is to create that very atmosphere with energy, sensitivity and simplicity, recognising that atmospehere comes from the collective consciousness of the dancers.

As I see it the very role of the Argentinian tango DJ is to create the atmosphere that is suspended from the thread of the collective consciousness of the dancers, and to do it with energy, sensitivity and simplicity.

I play musics from the traditional repertory which I select according to the atmosphere of the place at the very moment.

I like the whole repertory, but I admit a preference for the beginning of the 30ies. However, that preference will come after my dedication to playing the music that suits the dancers.

In a constant search, I hope to one day being able to create a pure tango atmosphere that would rely to a lesser extent on the tone that is inevitably given by the cortinas.

One step beyond that, I would even dream of once proposing a milonga that would be built after the model of Italian operas.
